Every project is different.

For this one, the focus for Polar NE was to create a safe, modern, recovery-focused space for people with a range of mental health needs.

The Brook is a new state-of-the-art inpatient unit at Langdon Hospital in Devon.

Set against a stunning countryside backdrop, it offers a therapeutic environment where service users feel safe and supported in a quiet, landscaped space.

There are ten beds, all with en-suite facilities including a kitchenette – steps which  maximise users’ independence,  while they all can enjoy ease of access to the outdoors.

But what truly sets this project apart is that, at every level, it was co-designed by users and carers with lived experience.

Working alongside Kier Construction, with Devon Partnership NHS Trust as the end client, Polar NE was proud to play a vital part in bringing this exciting project to life.

The products

Polar NE’s expert team installed:

  • 10x AA720 standard opening windows
  • 22x Trent Secure windows
  • 25x Humber Two Secure windows
  • 28x Hamble Secure doors
  • 12x Wansbeck Secure windows

In addition, bespoke pods were created featuring Orwell trickle ventilation – designed to balance safety with fresh airflow.

The project also included automated, fire-rated main entrance doors.

The delivery

This wasn’t just about products.

It was about ensuring everything fitted seamlessly into an environment shaped by the needs of the people who will benefit from it most.

That’s why attention to detail was crucial – from the security and durability of the windows and doors, through to the specialist ventilation pods, all tailored to the requirements of a modern mental health setting.

Working as part of a trusted and firmly established partnership with Kier, Polar NE brought to site both technical expertise and a deep understanding of what makes healthcare projects succeed – all built on over 20 years at the top of our industry,

The result

The scheme reached handover in July 2025.

The Brook is now a facility that the Trust, its staff, and most importantly the service’s users can be proud of.

It shows what can be achieved when lived experience, design, and delivery expertise come together – and Polar NE is proud to have contributed to such an important development.
